Why Your Company Needs a Brand Film — Not Just Social Media Videos

By Artlink Agency6 min readBrand Films · Corporate Video

If your entire video strategy is Instagram Reels and TikTok clips, you are generating attention — but not authority. There is a meaningful difference between content that gets scrolled past in three seconds and content that gets sent to a CEO before a board meeting. That difference is a brand film.

A brand film is not a longer social media video. It is a completely different category of content, built for a completely different purpose — and every business in Kenya that is serious about its reputation needs one.

What is a brand film?

A brand film is a 2–5 minute produced video that communicates who your company is, what you stand for, and who you serve. It is not an advertisement. It is not a product demonstration. It is not a highlight reel of your last event.

It is the film you send to a potential client when they ask: "Tell me about your company." It does the positioning before the sales conversation happens. When it's done well, a prospect who watches your brand film arrives at the first meeting already convinced.

Why social media content alone is not enough

Social media content is built for algorithms — short, stimulating, scroll-stopping. It is designed to compete for attention in a feed of a thousand other things. Brand films are built for decisions.

A procurement manager evaluating three production companies for a KSh 3 million conference does not make that decision based on a 30-second Instagram Reel. They watch the brand film, look at the portfolio, read the about page, and then decide whether to send the brief. Your Reels may have told them you exist. Your brand film tells them whether to trust you.

"Social media content builds awareness. A brand film builds trust. These are not the same thing."

What a brand film does that no ad can

It gives your company a voice. It shows your culture, your people, your process, and your values — not through a tagline, but through evidence. It positions you as the expert and the authority in your space before you say a single word in a client meeting.

And because it's produced properly — with a real script, real lighting, real colour grading, and a real edit — it remains relevant for 2–3 years. Compare that to a social media post, which has a 48-hour lifespan at best.

How long should a brand film be?

2–4 minutes is the sweet spot for most businesses. Long enough to communicate real depth and personality — short enough to hold the attention of a busy decision-maker. Anything over 5 minutes needs a very specific reason to exist. If your brand film is eight minutes long, it is not a brand film. It is a corporate documentary, which is a different thing entirely.

Edit & Delivery

A proper brand film takes 3–6 weeks from brief to delivery. The brief and narrative development phase is the most important — this is where the creative direction is set, the story structure is agreed, and the visual language is defined. Rushing this phase to get to the shoot day faster is where most brand films go wrong.

Research from Wistia's video benchmarking data consistently shows that 2–3 minute videos retain the highest percentage of viewers through to completion — making that the optimal length for brand films designed to be watched in full.
