Corporate Video vs. Documentary: Which Does Your Organisation Need?

By Artlink Agency7 min readCorporate Video · Documentaries

When an organisation decides it needs video content, the brief is often deceptively simple: "We want to tell our story." The problem is that "telling your story" can mean a two-minute brand film, a 20-minute documentary, a CEO interview, a series of social media clips, or something in between. The format you choose determines the production approach, the budget, the distribution strategy, and — most importantly — what it actually achieves.

Two of the most commonly confused formats are the corporate video and the documentary. They look related from the outside. Both involve cameras, crews, and editing. But they are built for entirely different purposes — and commissioning the wrong one for your goal is an expensive mistake.

What is a corporate video?

A corporate video is a produced piece of content designed to communicate a specific, controlled message on behalf of an organisation. It is strategic, scripted or tightly guided, and built around what the organisation wants to say. The production process starts with a brief and a script. The message is defined before a camera is turned on. Every interview question, every shot, every graphic, every piece of narration is in service of that predetermined message.

Corporate videos include brand films, company profiles, product demonstrations, staff training content, CSR videos, and investor communications. They are typically 1–5 minutes long, polished to a brand standard, and designed to be distributed across owned channels — website, social media, events, email campaigns.

What is a documentary?

A documentary is a filmed exploration of a subject — a person, a community, a process, an event, a social issue — that prioritises truth and discovery over predetermined messaging. The filmmaker goes into a documentary with a subject and a point of view, but not a script. The story emerges from what is actually found: the real conversations, the unexpected moments, the complexity that a scripted production would have edited out.

Documentaries are typically longer — 15 to 90 minutes — and they require more time in production and significantly more time in post-production, because the editor is constructing a narrative from raw reality rather than from a script. They are also more expensive per minute of finished content, because the ratio of footage shot to footage used is much higher.

"A corporate video says what you want to say. A documentary shows what is actually true. The best organisations eventually need both."

When to choose a corporate video

Choose a corporate video when you have a specific message to communicate, a defined audience to communicate it to, and a measurable outcome you want to achieve. If you are launching a new product, positioning your company for a pitch, communicating your values to recruits, or explaining a service to prospective clients — corporate video is the right format. It is controlled, efficient, and deployable at scale.

Choose Corporate Video When

  • You have a specific message to control
  • You need content for your website or social channels
  • You are building a brand film or company profile
  • Your budget is KSh 300K – 1.5M
  • You need content within 4–6 weeks
  • The content needs to stay on-brand at all times

Choose Documentary When

  • You want to explore a subject in depth
  • Your story is complex and cannot be scripted in advance
  • You are targeting film festivals or broadcast platforms
  • Your budget is KSh 1.5M+
  • You can commit to 3–12 months of production
  • The story matters more than the message

Can you combine both?

Yes — and increasingly, the most effective content strategies do exactly this. An organisation might commission a brand film (corporate video) for its website and sales process, and simultaneously fund a short documentary (8–12 minutes) about the communities it works with, the problems it is solving, or the people behind its work. The brand film converts. The documentary builds credibility and emotional connection over time. They serve different audiences at different points in the decision journey.

At Artlink Agency's documentary production unit, we work with NGOs, impact organisations, and forward-thinking corporates who understand that authentic storytelling requires a different production approach than brand communication. The equipment is the same. The mindset is completely different.
